Scholars’ Harbour • Explore the course
Big discoveries.
Stronger skills.
Welcome aboard our 11+ Mastery course: six purposeful, harbour-themed lessons that turn reading clues, number problems and reasoning puzzles into opportunities to think, explain and grow.
Designed for Years 4–5, with a maximum of six learners in each group. Each one-hour lesson combines clear teaching, supported practice and independent challenges. All materials are included.
What happens in a lesson?
Our teaching expertise shapes the whole journey: choosing a useful starting point, modelling the thinking behind an answer and noticing when a child needs another explanation or a greater challenge.
01 • Watch it
See the thinking
We demonstrate a method step by step, explaining the choices, checking the answer and showing how to spot a tempting mistake.
02 • Work together
Try it with support
We tackle a fresh example together. Children discuss ideas, ask questions and explain their reasoning while we guide and check understanding.
03 • Have a go
Make it your own
Each child applies the method independently to new questions. This shows what is secure and where the next step should be.
We begin with short recall activities, explore a main focus and a supporting skill, then bring earlier learning into a fresh challenge. A short finishing check helps us decide what comes next. Skills return across the course so children practise remembering and using them.
Six lessons. A harbour full of discoveries.
Lesson 1
Harbour Detectives
Follow the clues in a harbour story, separate evidence from guesses and explain an inference. Use place value and estimation to check whether number answers make sense.
Lesson 2
The Lost Message
Spot and test patterns in shapes and sequences, then investigate the clues surrounding an unfamiliar word. The challenge is to explain why a rule or meaning fits.
Lesson 3
The Market Mystery
Unpick word problems, choose useful operations and check the result. Explore relationships between words, numbers and symbols rather than relying on guesswork.
Lesson 4
The Fraction Cargo
Read carefully, check sentence meaning and edit for accuracy. Use equal-part diagrams to make fractions of quantities visible and understandable.
Lesson 5
The Lighthouse Puzzle
Investigate turns, reflections and visual rules. Build a short writing plan and develop it into a clear paragraph, with time to reread and improve.
Lesson 6
Independent Mastery Challenge
Bring the methods together in fresh maths, reading and reasoning challenges. Celebrate secure skills, compare with the starting point and identify personal next steps.
Playful tasks. Purposeful teaching.
Mysteries give children a reason to investigate. Visual models make ideas easier to discuss. Short challenges, shared discoveries and opportunities to explain keep learners actively involved. The theme brings the lessons to life; every activity has a learning purpose.
Every learner is noticed
The starting-point assessment helps us plan. During each lesson, individual answers, explanations and independent tasks provide regular checks on understanding. We adapt prompts and challenge as needed, then check what each child can do without help. A final review highlights progress and priorities for further practice.
Confidence matters, and so does the evidence in a child’s work. Feedback focuses on useful next steps, without public rankings or comparisons.
A small group or one-to-one?
Small groups: grow together
With no more than six learners, children can share strategies, hear another explanation and practise putting their own thinking into words. Familiar faces and shared challenges can build confidence and camaraderie. Individual thinking time and progress checks remain part of every lesson.
One-to-one: a personal pace
Individual tuition gives more time to a child’s particular questions and priorities. We can pause, revisit a tricky idea or move towards greater challenge, with teaching and practice adjusted to their starting point. The same clear teaching approach supports increasing independence.
Neither format suits every child. A free phone consultation can help us discuss which setting is likely to work well for yours.
